Reverse engineering instructional design to teach paragraph writing
Expository paragraph writing is difficult to learn and teach. For many students, particularly those with learning disabilities, it is difficult to manage multiple, simultaneous complex processes required. And for their teachers, writing is the content area they feel least prepared to teach. In a recent intervention study, the concept of reverse engineering was applied to instructional design to teach expository paragraph writing, using a color-cued graphic organizer, to students with dyslexia. The promising results of the study have been translated into implications for practice. A brief overview of the study will be included followed by a detailed discussion of how STEM content area teachers can teach this vital skill to their students.
